Nobel Laureate Amartya Sen has weighed in on the state of Indian politics, particularly focusing on the Congress party’s organizational challenges and the broader disunity within the opposition. He noted that the Opposition has significantly weakened due to internal divisions, highlighting the departure of key allies like JD(U) and RLD from the INDIA bloc.

Sen emphasized the need for greater empowerment of the underprivileged sections of society, stressing the importance of improved education, healthcare, and gender equity. He suggested considering a caste census as part of this empowerment process, highlighting the need to enhance India’s democratic fabric.

The Congress party, under the leadership of Rahul Gandhi, has pledged to conduct a nationwide caste census if it comes to power. Sen acknowledged the historical significance of the Congress party but pointed out the need for addressing its organizational issues for effective political representation.

Critiquing the economic policies of the BJP-led NDA government, Sen expressed concern about widespread illiteracy, health issues, and gender inequality hindering the progress of India’s poor. He highlighted the government’s focus on the interests of the affluent, calling for policies that prioritize the marginalized sections of society.

Regarding speculations about the BJP potentially altering the Indian Constitution if re-elected, Sen cautioned against such changes, stating that they would only serve to align with a singular religious focus rather than benefiting the common populace. He emphasized India’s secular and multicultural ethos, warning against any actions that might undermine these foundational principles.
